| Σχόλιο για τις αξίες | A very important area for breeding, passage and wintering waterbirds and raptors and breeding, migratory passerines, and breeding forest passerines. The site is valuable as a foraging area for raptors nesting elsewhere. Species of concern include: Phalacrocorax pygmeus, Pelecanus onocrotalus, Pelecanus crispus, Nycticorax nycticorax, Ardeola ralloides, Egretta garzetta, Egretta alba, Ciconia ciconia, Plegadis falcinellus, Platalea leucorodia, Anser erythropus, Anser anser, Tadorna tadorna, Anas crecca, Anas platyrhynchos, Aythya ferina, Aythya nyroca, Oxyura leucocephala, Aquila clanga, Hieraaetus pennatus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Chlidonias hybridus and Chlidonias niger. A wetland of great national and international importance. It supports rich bird populations in terms of both number and diversity, including rare and endangered species. The wetland is very important as a feeding ground for birds of prey nesting in the nearby forests, as a wintering and intermediate station for migratory birds, as well as a breeding area for a large number of birds. The increased biological productivity and the existence of rare plant species (Marsilea quadrifolia, Utricularia vulgaris etc) and also rare and diverse fauna within the site and in the forest ecosystems surrounding it increases even more the ecological value of the area. Concerning the wild growing plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, one taxon is protected by the EC Environment Legislation (1992), 2 taxa (Salvinia natans, Trapa natans) are included in WCMC and one taxon (Himantoglossum hircinum) is protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981). |

| Τρωτότητα | The major threat is the plan for alteration of the dyke system to raise water-levels. Illegal land reclamation, road construction, rubbish tipping and fishing are also threats. The main threats for Krousia mountain are logging and hunting. The seasonal changes in the water level by 4-8 m after the construction of the new dam in 1982 have probably the most serious impact on the wetland, affecting mainly marshy vegetation of shallow waters and riparian forest with their nesting bird populations. Other human activities affecting the ecological value of the wetland and mountain ecosystems include intensification of agriculture, hunting and forestry. |
