A mountain with rich forests of decidyoys and coniferous trees. It has grasslands with rich flora. There are many rare species and species with districted distribution in the Balkan peninsula. There is a monastery in mountain Kouskouras (Timios Prodromos). Although most commercial forests are publicity owned, they are have harvested by private associations under arrangements with Greek Forest Service. A lot of poor people work in logging and wood using industries, so the local unemployment decrease remarkable. Concerning the fauna the quality of the site is indicated by the occurence of the invertebrate Agrodiaetus nephohiptamenos, which is refered to Heath J. 1981. Threatened Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Europe. Council of Europe, the invertebrate Helix philibinensis, which is the southern edge of extension.Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, 5 taxa are greek endemics, two taxa are protected by the EC Environment Legislation (1992), 11 taxa (Anthemis cretica ssp. columnae, Dactylorhiza kalopissii, Festuca koritnicensis, Fritillaria drenovskii, Haplophyllum balcanicum, Inula ensifolia, Onosma heterophyllum, Rosa arvensis, Sempervivum kindingeri, Sempervivum marmoreum, Thesium brachyphyllum) are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list, 19 taxa (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Aster alpinus, Campanula orphanidea, Coeloglossum viride, Corallorhiza trifida, Dactylorhiza saccifera, Dactylorhiza sambucina, Dianthus gracilis ssp. gracilis, Dianthus petraeus ssp. orbelicus, Digitalis viridiflora, Epipactis atrorubens, Gentiana cruciata, Gentiana verna ssp. balcanica, Himantoglossum hircinum , Lilium martagon, Neottia nidus-avis, Paronychia rechingeri, Saxifraga ferdinandi-coburgi, Viola tricolor ssp. macedonica) are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981), 8 taxa (Chondrilla urumoffii, Cytisus agnipilus, Pedicularis friderici-augusti, Potentilla cinerea, Satureja pilosa, Saxifraga stribrnyi, Stachys officinalis, Thesium alpinum) are rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece, 21 taxa (Achillea chrysocoma, Achillea ageratifolia ssp. ageratifolia, Anthyllis aurea, Asperula aristata ssp. nestia, Bruckenthalia spiculifolia, Carum rigidulum ssp. palmatum, Carum strictum, Centaurea napulifera ssp. napulifera, Cephalaria flava ssp. flava, Cerastium decalvans, Erysimum drenowskii, Festucopsis sancta, Galium aegaeum, Hypericum rumeliacum ssp. rumeliacum, Iris reichenbachii, Onobrychis alba ssp. calcarea, Onobrychis montana ssp. scardica, Scrophularia laciniata, Sideritis scardica, Thymus degenii, Veronica barrelieri) are Balkan endemics and 6 taxa (Anthyllis vulneraria ssp. hispidissima, Saxifraga sempervivum, Stachys thirkei, Thymus leucotrichus, Thymus longicaulis ssp. chaubardii, Thymus thracicus) find their main distribution area in the Balkan Peninsula extending also to Turkey. |
