Σχόλιο για τις αξίες | An extensive area of continuous forests, deep valleys and pastures characterized by graet variety of unfragmented habitats. The area is undisturbed by human habitation and only recently a road network has been constructed. The area has relicts of a Pinus peuce forest as well as areas with Q. trojana woods, two habitats with very limited distribution in Greece. A unique feature is the active bog of Kali Pediada, which is the largest of its kind in Greece and hosts a variety of rare plants as well as a number of birds of prey which use the bog as feeding grounds. The beech forests of Blatsa and Black Forest are of great age, with structure and development close to climax with a great number of decaying, dying and dead trees. All the above mentioned features contribute to the great ornithological importance of the area, especially for birds of prey. More specifically, Egyptian vultures still nest, while the other three vultures (Lammergeier, Griffon and Black Vulture) visit the area regularly. There's also a good population of Golden Eagles, as well as Black Kites, Lanner Falcons, Peregrine Falcons, etc. Furthermore it is one of the very few places in Greece that hold populations of the Hazel Grouse, while woodpecker populations are also very high with species like the Grey, Black and Middle Spotted Woodpecker. Other noteworthy species is the Semi-collared Flycatcher, the Red-backed Shrike and the Tawny Pipit. It is also worth noting the existence of 14 caves, which are of great importance to paleoecological research as well as to bat populations. \n |

Τρωτότητα | The area has been generally undisturbed until recently that a road network has been constructed. Although seemingly undisturbed, forests of Kajmaktchalan are threatened by illegal tree felling poaching and road construction for forest recreation. The skiing centre operates as an attraction point for tourists, whereas plans for further tourist development of the area will certainly impose new threats. Facilitation of access to various tourist attractions demands the construction, widening and paving of new or existing roads, as is the case with the road that goes through the Black Forest (beech forest). Additionally at present and for the next 20 years, four mines are operating in the area around Orma occupying an area of 17.5 ha in total, causing serious landscape and habitat degradation. Most birds of prey suffer also from the use of poisoned baits (for the extermination of wolves) and this is the cause, along with the lack of food, for the crash of all the Vulture populations. Illegal shooting, though limited, still remains a problem for eagles and falcons. The population of the Hazel Grouse is threatened by increased disturbance, especially since it's an isolated and small population. \n |
