| Σχόλιο για τις αξίες | Nestos gorge is characterized by the very rich flora (about 500 taxa). The gorge is a refuge for rare birds of prey and for mammals such as the otter (Lutra lutra). It is the only known inland nesting site of Tadorna ferruginea. The area is protected as an aesthetic forest since 1977. (State Law: 283/1977, Nestos Aesthetic Forest). Concerning the fauna the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of the invertebrates Everes agriades which is referred to Heath J. 1981 which have been included in the threatened Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Europe (Council of Europe), Araschnia levana which present the southern edge of extension, Maculinea alcon which is referred in the Red List of Threatened Animals (1988 IUCN), Lycaeides argyrognomon which is referred to Koomen P. van Helsdingen P.J. 1993 listing of biotopes in Europe according to their significance for invertebrates (Council of Europe) and the Apatura metis (included in Annex IV of Directive 92/43/EEC). Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of several important plant taxa. Among them, one taxon (Galium asparagifolium) is included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list, 3 taxa (Atropa bella - donna, Haberlea rhodopensis, Jovibarba heuffelii) are protected by the Greek Presidential Decree (67/1981) and 3 taxa (Anthyllis vulneraria ssp. bulgarica, Cephalaria flava ssp. flava, Stachys leucoglossa) are Balkan endemics. |

| Τρωτότητα | Planned road construction through Nestos gorge will increase the disturbance of the ecosystem and the threat from poaching. Marble quarries are close to the west side of the area and requests for new quarries to the east side. There are an uncontrolled number of tourists (visitors) because there are a lot of areas of picnic for leisure. Human activities include also forestry, grazing and hunting. |
