| Σχόλιο για τις αξίες | This is an important site for raptors and alpine species. Breeding birds include some of the species in Europe that are restricted (when breeding) to the Eurasian high-montane biome. Species of concern include Prunella collaris, Monticola solitarius, Parus lugubris, Sitta neumayer, Tichodroma muraria, Pyrrhocorax graculus, Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocoraxand Montifringilla nivalis.The presence of a great number of endemic or important species (e.g., Arenaria gionaea, etc.) in the mountain range of Ghiona, especially in the rocky formations of its summits and the steep slopes of the ravines, makes the area of great ecological importance. |

| Τρωτότητα | The main threats are from open-cast bauxite mining. The illegal use of poison baits and illegal hunting have already caused the loss of Gypaetus barbatus from the site. The existence of significant quantities of the mineral bauxite and its intense open cast mining has a negative impact on the whole ecosystem of the mountain range of Gkiona. Also, the future mining activities must be mentioned in the higher parts of the mountain with all their negative influences on the rare and endemic plants. The area suffers intense pressure from human activities. Bauxite mines, hunting, shooting, grazing, forestry, opening and extension of roads in or near the most important animal habitats are major threats to their survival. |
