Περιγραφή Τόπου The main vegetation type is forests of Quercus frainetto. Its growth has proved successful in places of good quality. On the westerly exposed sites, Q. frainetto is found mixed with Pinus halepensis while at the edge of the forest it is mixed with evergreen broad-leaved species, which also represent its understorey (shrub understorey). The absence of natural regeneration is quite characteristic together with illegal tree-felling and the presence of a mosaic of cultivated and grazed land. The parasitic plant species Loranthus europaeus has been observed in this site. The woodlands of the studied site also contain a seed producing population of Pinus nigra species. The Pinus halepensis woods cover lower altitudes up to 700m and are used by farmers for resin collection. Their understorey is composed of evergreen broad-leaved species. In the lower altitudes some parts of the formations, which had previously experienced fires, are now at the stage of natural regeneration. The presence of macchie vegetation is uniform in a small limestone area and occurs as an understorey of Pinus halepensis and in the lower part of Quercus frainetto formations. The area around the human habitations is occupied by phrygana, abandoned fields and wooded areas. Cultivated land covers areas around the buildings but also occurs in the forests of Quercus frainetto originating from fires, trangression and tree-felling.

Σχόλιο για τις αξίες Clusters of saplings prevent soil erosion and positively effect the ecology of the area. The forests of the study area are within the collective basin of the Erymanthos and Pineios rivers and help to protect the soil, the cultivated areas and the archaeological site. The oak forest and the Pinus halepensis forest occupy the larger part of the site. Macchie vegetation is limited. We consider that the protection of the biotopes of in this ecologically sensitive region, threatened not only by a retreat from the natural zones of development in Greece but also from disappearing from Peloponnisos, it will constitute an important measure, contributing to the conservation of the structure and the balance of the Mediterranean type ecosystems. This is an important site for species characterisitic of a mosaic of forest, pasture and olive-groves. Species of concern include Dendrocopos medius and Emberiza caesia. Some vertebrate taxa (excluding birds) have been recorded from this site so far; but it is certain that the local fauna is much more variable. Of the remaining taxa listed in section 3.3 as Other Important Species respectively, the jackal Canis aureus is a "Vulnerable" species according to the Greek Red Data Book (motivation A), whereas the lacertid lizard Podarcis are Peloponnesian endemics (motivation B). Apart from the jackal and the fox, all the other taxa are protected by the Bern Convention and are therefore allocated motivation C. The lizards Ablepharus kitaibelii, Lacerta trilineata and Podarcis peloponnesiaca as well as the weasel Mustela nivalis, are given the D motivation since the former has been evaluated by the CORINE-Biotopes Project and the others are protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981. The hare Lepus europaeus is marked with the same motivation since it is a rare species (due to it being hunted) throughout Greece. The environmental quality of this site is confirmed by its ranking as an EC Important Bird Area. Among the birds living in the area threatened taxa occur, such as the "Rare" Dendrocopos leucotos and the "Insufficiently Known" Falco peregrinus.

Κίνδυνοι

Απειλές/διαταραχές
Σχόλιο για τις απειλές-διαταραχές
Τρωτότητα Fires, tree-felling, arable farming, both legal and illegal grazing, logging and hunting, are the main destructive activities carried out by the inhabitants of this site. Another threat is increased tourism, mostly during the summer months when the largest part of the oak forest and also parts of the Pinus halepensis forest are used as places of recreation. Burning is also a danger.
