Σχόλιο για τις αξίες | The presence of broad-leaved deciduous forests with Quercus frainetto and Q. pubescens, in combination with the great areas covered by coniferous forests with Abies cephalonica give special ecological importance to the mountainous ecosystems of Panaitoliko. The broad-leaved deciduous forests, although rather degraded, constitute a special ecological ingredient to this mountain, especially as their area is continuously declining in Central and Southern Greece. Anthyllis vulneraria subsp. bulgarica which has been included in the Other Important Species with motivation D, due to its scattered populations in the examined site and its distribution in the Balkan peninsula (Balkan endemic). The available data on the vertebrate fauna (excluding birds) indicate that in this site there are two species listed in Annex II of the Directive 92/43/EEC, these being the wolf Canis lupus and the toad Bombina variegata (see section 3.2). The former taxon is one of the priority species of this Directive and is considered threatened in Greece ("Vulnerable" according to the Greek Red Data Book). In this site the wolf shows the southernmost end of its distribution in the country (and one of the southernmost in Europe). Similarly, Bombina variegata has one of its marginal populations in the Balkans at this site. Some other non-bird vertebrate taxa occuring in this site have been evaluated as Other Important Species (see section 3.3). All of these taxa are mentioned in the Bern Convention lists (the wildcat Felis silvestris was also mentioned in the CITES Convention), a fact indicated by the motivation symbol C. Taxa marked with motivation D are mentioned by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981 and/or by the CORINE-Biotopes project (Ablepharus kitaibelii, and the wildcat Felis silvestris). The snake, Coluber gemonensis is endemic to the western and southern Balkans, and the gecko lizard Cyrtodactylus kotschyi bibroni shows a very broken distribution range in Greece, so that many of its populations are fully isolated. The Wildcat is indicated with the D motivation, since it is generally very rare in Greece. As for the avifauna, the occurrence of the threatened ("Vulnerable") eagle Aquila chrysaetos, is the most notable presence. The invertebrate species listed in section 3.3 with motivation C is protected by the Bern Convention. |

Τρωτότητα | Intensive logging which took place in earlier times as well as overgrazing, are the main reasons for the destruction and hinderance of natural regeneration of the forests. The main factors that threaten the ecosystem of this site and hence indirectly the fauna, are careless road-construction and intensive grazing. Hunting is also responsible for the decline of bird communities. |
