Γεωλογία
Περιγραφή Τόπου The site is a part of the geological formation of the north Cyclades. This unit belongs to the Attikocycladic zone. The substratum of the site consists, in its major part, of crystalline gneiss. In the past, the exploitation of the iron deposits used to be profitable for the economy island. The annual average rainfall is one of the highest of the Cyclades islands. The average annual rainfall is about 600mm and the average annual temperature is 19 C.The site starts from the sea level and reaches up to 582m (Troulos, the highest peak of the island), in its northern part. The terrestrial part covers the largest part of the site. Almost half of it is covered by typical low Aegean phrygana. The site’s coastline is in south, with a length of about 14 Km. Four bays (Kalo Ampeli, Koytalas, Malliako, Dyo Gialloudia) are formed in the south. At the shores the bays Kalo Ampeli and Koutalas there are sand. There are also sand dunes with characteristic vegetation. The hydrographic net of the site includes rivers with N - S direction and a total ength of about 14Km. It also includes a number of springs, foundains and wells; There are about 24 of these, and most of them are located at the southern part of the site.In the west part of the site (Megalo Livadi) there are abandoned mines. Throughout the site there are pavements and stone hedges demarking the borders of properties and fields, mostly now abandoned. In the south of the site there are still few cultivations, vineyards and olive trees, mainly, and a fair number of habitations.

Σχόλιο για τις αξίες The main characteristic of the site is the combination of geomorphological and hydrogeological features that gives rise to a lot of different habitats types. Several different habitat types of Annex I are represented on the site despite its small area. Only few endemic plants have been reported, an exceptionally low number for an island of the Cyclades. However, our major knowledge for the plants dates since 1928 and a more systematic renewal work on the flora of the island is likely to enrich this list. The fauna of the site is quite rich. Most noteworthy is the presence of the marine mammals, the monk seal and the dolphin. The invertebrate fauna, in particular, is very interesting: several endemic invertebrates have been found in the site. Notably, for the species Deroceras seriphium (molluscs), Tinodes serifos, Stactobia livadia (Trichoptera) and Hydraena malickyi (Coleoptera) the island is their locus typicus. There are very good records for terrestrial molluscs and terrestrial isopods. It is possible, if a moritoring programme is organized, to investigate the changes in the composition of the fauna. In coclusion, the morphological features and the scientific interest in addition to the ancient monuments and to modern relics (abandoned mines), that exist in the site, make it a site of exceptional value. In the recent years there is an increacing tourism development in the site. The variety of attractions the site presents could be combined with its ecological and scientific importance to make it a candidate for sustainable development and alternative types of tourism. Απειλές/διαταραχές
Σχόλιο για τις απειλές-διαταραχές
Τρωτότητα There is an increase of the human activities, especially in the south part of the site. The pressure of the such activities may have considerable results. The vulnerability of the site is mainly due to the increase of building activities, mostly tourist accommodations (402). The effect of this development could be the alteration of the hydraulic characters in the site, especially of the water beds (890). The uncontrolled tourism development and use of the bays as moors for yachts will change the ecological conditions at the shallow inlets (690). The uplands of the site are covered with low phrygana and maquis and serve as pasture for goats (130); grazing puts an intensive pressure on the different species of the flora. Sea water is polluted by household wastes and sewage and by wastes from the various ships (700)
