The main characteristic of the site is the combination of geomorphological and hydrogeological features that gives rise to a lot of different habitats types. Several different habitat types of Annex I are represented on the site despite its small area. Only few endemic plants have been reported, an exceptionally low number for an island of the Cyclades. However, our major knowledge for the plants dates since 1928 and a more systematic renewal work on the flora of the island is likely to enrich this list. The fauna of the site is quite rich. Most noteworthy is the presence of the marine mammals, the monk seal and the dolphin. The invertebrate fauna, in particular, is very interesting: several endemic invertebrates have been found in the site. Notably, for the species Deroceras seriphium (molluscs), Tinodes serifos, Stactobia livadia (Trichoptera) and Hydraena malickyi (Coleoptera) the island is their locus typicus. There are very good records for terrestrial molluscs and terrestrial isopods. It is possible, if a moritoring programme is organized, to investigate the changes in the composition of the fauna. In coclusion, the morphological features and the scientific interest in addition to the ancient monuments and to modern relics (abandoned mines), that exist in the site, make it a site of exceptional value. In the recent years there is an increacing tourism development in the site. The variety of attractions the site presents could be combined with its ecological and scientific importance to make it a candidate for sustainable development and alternative types of tourism.
