Περιγραφή Τόπου The island of Andros is the northernmost island of the Cyclades complex. It is also the closest to the mainland, having the biggest size and altitude, and it receives the highest precipitation values in Cyclades. The proposed site is located to the northern part of the Andros, which is the less habituated area of the island and it includes the main mountainous area and Vitali gulf. Due to the lack of main roads the approach to the district by car is rather difficult. The most proximate villages are Vitali and Arnas. Although in general the site can be considered a typical Cycladian ecosystem (featuring the typical rock surfaces, the steep sea cliffs and the typical aegean phrygana vegetation) it is also characterized by a unique mosaic habitat distribution, mainly because of the high altitudes (mountain Petalo, 995 m) the presence of gorges, springs, intermittently flowing streams and temporary ponds. It is also noticeable that the human activities in the area are do not have the such an impact as in other Greek islands with greater tourism development. The traditional cultivations of cereals, legumes and vegetables, although nowadays limited, are still balanced.

Σχόλιο για τις αξίες The quality and importance of the site result from the following elements: 1) It is an area of great aesthetic value (especially the gulf of Vitali and the area around Arnas village); 2) The site contains a fair number of habitat types and biotopes. 3) There is a high degree of flora and fauna (especially avifauna) endemism; 4) There exist rare plant species as well as plant communities with very distribution in the Aegean area; 5) There are important birds' refugia on cliffs; 6) The site is naturally protected because of the steep rocks and cliffs and the lack of roads that make the area difficult to access, so it is isolated from the main touristic areas of Andros island.OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES WITH MOTIVATION DPlants: Galanthus ikariae ssp. snogerupii is a rare species (IUCN 1993), protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81) and by the CITES (Appendix II). Crataegus heldreichii is a balkan endemic. Campanula sartorii and Ferulago serpentinica are endemic species included in the IUCN Red Data List in the category of threatened plants characterized as rare. C. sartorii is also protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81).Invertebrates: The species Hipparchia aristaeus is protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81.

Τρωτότητα The main threats within and around the site have been described in section 6.1. However it must be mentioned that these impacts are mainly modifications caused by human activities. The more important threats within the site are: fire and overgrazing, stream water use for field irrigation (some intermittent streams have dried out) and hunting.
