The quality and importance of the site result from the following elements:1)The island of Saria is very important for the avifauna of Greece. It is one of the Important Bird Areas. This is an important location for species associated with Mediterranean scrub and for breeding seabirds. Species of concern include: Hieraaetus fasciatus. Moreover, it is of great aesthetic and archaeological value. 2) The significant biodiversity of the site, indicated by the many rare and endemic species of plants and animals. 3) Tristomo gulf is the most important marine area of Karpathos. It is a fishing area with great productivity. At hard seabed surrounding the bay the bivalve Arca noae thrives in abundant populations, while the soft seabed of the interior of the gulf hosts the greater population of the bivalve Pinna nobilis in the south Aegean. 4) The typical of Karpathos geomorphology of the island with screes, precipices and rocky shores with cliffs.NOTE: the population data for Monachus monachus refer to the coasts of the whole Karpathos and Saria.OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES IN 3.3 WITH MOTIVATION D:1) The amphibian Rana ridibunda is included in Annex IV of the Directive 92/43/EEC. The reptiles Cyrtodactylus kotschyi and Hemidactylus turcicus are protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81). The species Chalcides ocellatus ocellatus is included in Annex IV of the Directive 92/43/EEC and it is protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81). 2) The important Bivalvia species (Koomen P. and P.J. van Helsdingen) Pinna nobilis, is included in Annex IV of the Directive 92/43/EEC and it is protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81). 3) The bat species Pipistrellus savii is included in Annex IV of the Directive 92/43/EEC and it is protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81). 4) Plants: The species Phlomis pichleri, Campanula carpatha, Silene ammophila ssp. carpathum, Dianthus fruticosus ssp. carpathus, Erysimum candicum ssp. carpathum, Limonium carpathum, Senecio gnaphalodes and Staehelina fruticosa are protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81) and are also included in the IUCN 1993 (Greece), 1988 (Europe) and 1993 (World) list of threatened species with the characterization «Rare». Leontice leontopetalum ssp. leontopetalum is an endangered species in Greece (IUCN, 1993), while its World status is unknown. The following orchid species are protected by the CITES Convention (Annex C): Anacamptis pyramidalis, Orchis sancta. The species Trifolium barbeyi, Tordylium hirtocarpum and Anthemis ammanthus ssp. ammanthus are protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81).The following species are protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81) and are included in the IUCN Red Data List (1993) in the category of threatened plants: Scabiosa variifolia (rare), Campanula delicatula (rare), and Seseli gummiferum crithmifolium (rare), Asperula tournefortii (rare). Arum creticum is a species with distribution in Crete and the East Aegean (only in SW Turkey out of Greece). Galium canum ssp. ovatum has distribution in the Cretan area East Aegean Islands and Turkey. Lithodora hispidula ssp. hispidula is endemic to East Aegean Islands, Crete and W. Turkey. Teucrium brevifolium is an S. Aegean species occuring in Anatolia, Egypt and Libya out of GreeceNote: The IUCN characterizations given concern the plant's status in Greece, unless otherwise stated. |
