Περιγραφή Τόπου The lake which characterizes the site is situated close to Tripoli and between sparsely vegetated hills. The size and depth of the fresh water lake fluctuates remarkably from season to season and also from year to year, depending on annual precipitation and the function of springs, underground streams, etc. In some years the lake is completely dry. It is to be pointed out, however, that the majority of the area formely covered by lake-water nowdays has been transformed into apple orchards.

Σχόλιο για τις αξίες Nine non-bird vertebrate species recorded in this site have been considered as Other Important Species according to the valuation system of Section 3.3. Of these, the Kuhl's Pipistrelle, Pipistrellus kuhli, and the Grey Hamster, Cricetulus migratorius, appear in the Greek Red Data Book as "Vulnerable" and "Endangered" species respectively. The latter species is very rare in Greece confined to the eastern central part of the country (Sterea Ellada) and Peloponnisos; the range of this species is discontinuous having its southwestern end in Greece. The Peloponnisos Wall Lizard, Podarcis peloponnesiaca is endemic to Peloponnisos. All the taxa included in section 3.3 are mentioned in the lists of the Bern Convention, with the exception of Cricetulus migratorius; so they are marked with the motivation category C. Similarly, all are protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981 and for this reason they are indicated by D (Anguis cephallonicus appears in both documents under the name A. fragilis from which is has recently been separated). The frog Hyla arborea and the bat Pipistrellus kuhli, additionally receive the D motivation as they are mentioned by the CORINE-Biotopes Project. Similarly, the hamster Cricetulus migratorius is also allocated motivation D since it is rare and has the zoo-geographical characteristics mentioned above. Another fact indicating the zoological quality of this site is its diverse avifauna composed of waterbirds, birds of prey and other bird groups. These live either within the site or in the surrounding (using the lake as a feeding ground). One can find bitterns (Ixobrychus minutus), herons (N. nycticorax), ibises (Plegadis falcinellus), egrets (Egretta garzetta), waders (H. himantopus), terns (Sterna albifrons), eagles (Circaetus gallicus, Aquila heliaca, Hieraaetus fasciatus), harriers (Circus aeruginosus), falcons (Falco tinnunculus) and many others. Most of them are threatened species according to the Greek Red Data Book even classified in the "Endangered" category (Plegadis falcinellus, Aquila heliaca). The site should be considered as very important for waterfowl, especially during the spring migration period. It should also be pointed out that this is one of the few inland wetlands present in Peloponnisos. Due to this rich avifauna, the site is evaluated as an E.C. Important Bird Area.

Απειλές/διαταραχές
Σχόλιο για τις απειλές-διαταραχές
Τρωτότητα Lake water is used for irrigation, and during dry seasons the lake's banks and bottom are used as arable areas. Bad management of the water resource, shooting and stock-farming are also human activities with negative impacts on the site. The area suffers from heavy shooting which again seems to be the main threat to the rich bird fauna and is the prohibitive factor which ranks the site among the most valuable in Peloponnisos for migrant species. There are also influences from arable and stock-farming, water extraction for irrigation needs, etc. After relatively dry winters the wetland becomes completely dry during the summer. These situations have had obvious detrimental effects on the animal habitats and consequently are reason for the decline of animal populations. Measures must therefore be taken to restore the water level of the lake and to protect the fauna from detrimental uncontrolled human activities.
