Σχόλιο για τις αξίες | The evergreen sclerophylous vegetation of the area in combination with the occurrence of the Castria cave, make the area of a significant ecological, ecotourist and educational importance. Therefore, the protection and conservation of Abies cephalonica forest as a main element of this site is required.Although the site's fauna is moderately diverse, its importance is appreciated. Some bat taxa are included in Annex II of the Directive 92/43/EEC (see section 3.2). All the following are threatened in Greece: Rhinolophus mehelyi, Miniopterus schreibersi and Myotis myotis are considered as "Endangered" and the remaining as "Vulnerable" taxa according to the Greek Red Data Book. They also appeared in the species lists of the Bern Convention and the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981. Rhinolophus mehelyi is said to be the rarest of the rhinolophid bats in Greece. The stream frog Rana graeca, and the lizard taxa listed in the section 3.3 are evaluated as Other Important Species. The lacertid lizard Podarcis peloponnesiaca is a Greek taxon endemic to Peloponnisos. All these taxa receive C and D motivations since they have been protected by the Bern Convention and the Greek Presidential Decree, respectively. |

Τρωτότητα | This site has become a significant tourist attraction during the recent years, contributing to the tourist development of the whole area. The intensive grazing within the habitats of the site in combination with the tourist activities contribute to the degradation of their ecologic characteristics. The gradually increasing tourist interest for the Kastria cave (Spilaio Kastrion), which was opened to the public, is very likely to cause problems to the delicate cave fauna. The disturbance of bat colonies (especially that of the very susceptible Miniopterus schreibersi) because of the continuous visitors present, lights, and their effects on the caves sensitive biotic and abiotic functions could even lead to the bats being completely driven away. |
