Σχόλιο για τις αξίες | The importance of the area as a habitat of the mediterranean monk seal is evident by the plethora of activities subsidised by the European Union. Research in the area for the identification of reproduction cases of Monachus monachus has been conducted in the area since 1983. From 1985 until 1995 five projects have been carried out in the Kefallinia and Ithaca with the aid of the European Union. Fundamental monitoring activities of population, nesting sites and recording of damaging on fishing equipment have been run by "ARCHIPELAGOS" after the projects had been concluded. "ARCHIPELAGOS" is a non-profit organisation.A constant population of 15-25 individuals living in the area represents 5-7% of the world's population and 10% of the greek population. Ten to fifteen individuals is estimated to be the number of individuals of a certain period and not the standing population. During the 15-years period of research a total number of 30-35 individuals has been recorded. The whole area is also very important for several cetacean included in the Bern Convention: Delphinus delphis (reproduction), Stenella coeruloalba (resident), Grampus griseus (sporadic), Ziphius cavirostris (resident), Balaenoptera physalus (probably resident) and Pseudorca crassidents (one observation), Tursiops truncatus. Orcinus orca (in Bern Convention) and Physeter catodon have been reported by local fishermen offshore NW Zakynthos and west coast of Kefallinia. In general, both terrestrial and marine habitats are in good conservation status in quite intact natural environment. |

Τρωτότητα | The mediterranean monk seal is threaten mainly by deliberately killing by coastal fishermen and to some extend to accidental deaths in fishing gear.In this area mortality due to human activities has been decreased considerably as deliberate killing has practically stopped and no accidents were reported during the last years. The most serious threat for the monk seal is uncontrolled tourism development on the coast, oil pollution, liquid and solid wastes, noise pollution, approach of the very same animal and its shelter sites by speedboats etc. The last case forms quite serious threat and it can lead to absolute abandonment of calf or even abortion or complete abandonment of the nesting site which it may be also be a habitat for the bat Myotis blythi (Annex II 92/43/EEC Priority species). Marine caves on these coasts are generally in good conservation status, however several of them are easily accessed by humans and debris transferred by currents degrade the interior. Over fishing and illegal fishing (dynamite, chlorine, SCUBA, drift-nets etc) seriously degrade the marine habitats and food web. |
