Σχόλιο για τις αξίες | Stena Kalamakiou, a gorge surrounded, a gorge of Pinios river mainly surrounded by bare hills, a land is not used for agriculture but for stock farming. Although having no special characteristics, the gorge is a valuable riverine ecosystem; it is situated in the heart of the Thessalic plain, a problematic region highly influenced by human activities. Therefore it is of special importance for the wild fauna and flora of the area, one of the last resorts in the region and needs protection. The site is also important because of the presence of rare species of birds and fishes. Specifically, the riverine cliffs around the gorge are important for rare birds of prey. The area is considered an EC Important Bird Area. It has also a high endemism regarding fish: 5 endemic subspecies, 4 species endemic to Greece and 2 species endemic to Greece and S. Yugoslavia. The endemic fish species of Pinios river are generally vulnerable and locally threatened; however in the area of the site the danger of pollution is comparatively reduced.OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES WITH MOTIVATION D1) Leuciscus cephalus vardarensis: Endemic subspecies of Aoos, Pinios, Aliakmon, Axios and Gallikos rivers. Protected by general fishing laws. Cited in the Red Data Book of the threatened vertebrates of Greece as a generally safe but locally vulnerable species.2) Alburnus alburnus thessalicus: Endemic subspecies of Thessaly. According to the Red Data Book, its populations are vulnerable.3) Alburnoides bipunctatus thessalus: Endemic subspecies of Greece (Pinios, Aliakmon, Axios and Loudias rivers) and South Yougoslavia. The species is included in the annex III of the Bern Convention and considered threatened (CORINE-Biotopes project 1988)4) Silurus glanis: The species is included in the annex III of the Bern Convention and considered threatened (CORINE-Biotopes project 1988).5) Hyla arborea: Included in annex II of the Bern convention and and considered threatened (CORINE-Biotopes project 1988). It is also protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81.6) Lacerta trilineata, Podarcis erhardii, Podarcis taurica: Included in annex II of the Bern convention, also listed on annex IV of the Directive 92/43/EEC and are also protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81.7) Cyrtodactylus kotschyi, Coluber najadum: Protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81. Included in annex II of the Bern Convention.8) Natrix natrix: Protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81.9) Falco tinnunculus, Muscicapa striata, Sitta neumayer, Athene noctua :Included in annex II of the Bern Convention.10) Remiz pendulinus: The site, according to Corine, is one of the 5 most important sites for the species. The species is also on Annex III of the Bern Convention.11) Ablepharus kitaibelii, Hemidactylus turcicus, Martes martes, Mustela nivalis : Protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81. They also.included annex III of the Bern convention.12) Meles meles: Included in annex III of the Bern convention.NOTES1. Τρωτότητα | The principal problems and threats of the region are caused by the direct and indirect human impacts and activities. The major problem is the pollution from dumping and deposition of industrial, agricultural, stock farming (from pigsties, slaughter houses, cheese dairies etc) and urban waste (701). A significant problem of Pinios river is also the run - off of pesticides and fertilizers used in the surrounding agricultural land (110/ 120). Control of pollution and conservation of riparian forests are necessary. A serious threat to the ecosystem is also the water pumping for the irrigation of the nearby land during the summer season (130). The pumping can be so intense that it often leads to the severe fall of the water level and the destruction of the riverside and hydrophilous vegetation (800). Needless to expand on the stress this causes to the fauna and flora of the area and to the balance of the ecosystem. Other threats are finally, the expansion of agricultural land (151) through the illegal forestry and tree exploitation (167), the sand extraction (300) and the extensive leisure fishing (220). Due to the geomorphology of the site, some of these problems can be considered as mainly located in other parts of the river, specifically where it flows through the Thessaly plain, and not strictly at Stena Kalamakiou. It is clear though, that the nature of a river ecosystem is such that we cannot isolate a section of it. That means that a problem of pollution in one area is almost certain to affect a greater part of the river. The most vulnerable part of the site is the river (water quality) and the riparian forest that needs to keep its diversity and structure. |
