Γεωλογία
Περιγραφή Τόπου The aesthetic forest, Dasos Stenis, which covers half of the site, is situated at the south slope of Dirfys mountain. A variety of inclines, ranging from smooth to steep, characterize this mountainous area. The parent material of the soil consists of clay and crystal schists with scattered occurence of Permion, Upper Triassic, and Jurassic limestones. The existence of numerous springs, small streams and ravines crossing the forest surface is notable. The dominant tree species in the woody area are Pinus halepensis, Castanea sativa, Abies cephalonica (at high altitudes), Quercus sp., and Platanus orientalis. The other half of the site, located at higher altitudes and including the peak Delfi mainly consists of steep limestone screes. It must be noted that the Abies cephalonica forest (Corine 91 code 42.18) is a habitat type not included in Annex I.

Σχόλιο για τις αξίες The site gains special ecological and aesthetic interest from the combination of its floristic diversity with the geomorphological and hydrological features. In this area, there exist many representative habitat types, which support numerous local endemic or greek endemic plant species. The presence of both endemic invertebrates and endemic vertebrates which, although their exact populations are still indeterminate, are under threat (they are protected by the Bern Convention) should be greatly emphasized, since many of them have limited distribution areas.OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES WITH MOTIVATION D.Plants:Damasonium alisma is characterized as vulnerable in Greece (IUCN, 1993). Linum aroanicum is characterized as rare in Greece (IUCN, 1993). Pterocephalus brevis is included in the CORINE biotopes checklist of threatened plants and is protected by the national Presidential Decree 67/81.Campanula rupestris, Campanula constantini, Campanula spatulata, Rindera graeca, Stachys tetragona, Hypericum fragile, Scutellaria rupestris ssp. parnassica and Verbascum delphicum are protected by the national Presidential Decree 67/81 and are characterized as rare species in Greece, in Europe and in the World (IUCN, 1998, 1993). Euphorbia amygdaloides ssp. heldreichii is a species with distribution limited in Greece and S. Albania. Poa thessala, Dianthus viscidus, Erysimum pusillum ssp. microstylum, Crocus sieberi ssp. sublimis and Carum graecum ssp. graecum are balkan endemics. Anthemis cretica ssp. cretica is a Balkan endemic (it currently includes the species A. panachaica and A. meteorica which are included in the IUCN list of threatened plants as rare and are protected by the Greek Law -Presidential decree 67/81).Valantia aprica is a balkan endemic (Greece, Albania).Thymus dolopicus, Scabiosa taygetea, Sesleria vaginalis, Geranium humberti, Acer opalus ssp. hyrcanum var. reginae-amaliae and Cirsium heldreichii are protected by the national Presidential Decree 67/81. Asperula suffruticosa and Paeonia mascula ssp. hellenica are endemic species protected by the national Presidential Decree 67/81 and characterized as threatened, with indeterminate status (IUCN, 1998, 1993).Amphibians: Salamandra salamandra is protected by the national Presidential Decree 67/81.Mammals: Erinaceus concolor is protected by the national Presidential Decree 67/81.
