Περιγραφή Τόπου This site is a Holocene delta. Its morphodynamic type, according to the decrease of river discharge in relation to the increase in wave energy, is classified as birdfoot. This means that the riverbeds look like the toes of a bird distinctly separated from one another. The provision of the mixed river materials is quite important. The dunes existing in the area can be divided into two zones. The first is composed of lowland almost flat dunes. A part of their surface covered by vegetation, and the rest by plant remnants and humus. The second zone has a higher altitude with dominant plants being Ammophila arenaria and Medicago maritima. Behind this area there is scrub vegetation (e.g. Vitex agnus castus, Quercus coccifera, Sarcopoterium spinosum etc). In order to limit the extension of this type of dunes and protect the nearby cultivated land an artificial wood composed of Pinus halepensis, Acacia sp., Nerium oleander, Gleditsia triacanthos etc was planted. Along the river banks the vegetation mainly consists of Phragmites australis, Typha spp., and Salix alba.

Αισθητική Αξία
Σχόλιο για τις αξίες The importance of this site is mainly due to the existing dunes, the aesthetic value of the artificial wood and the existing remnants of riparian forest stands along the river banks. The diversity of the local fauna is also notable. Several non-bird vertebrate taxa recorded in the area have been evaluated as follows: some of them are mentioned in Annex II of the Directive 92/43/EEC (see section 3.2). We have to underline here that according to Economidis (pers. comm.) the fish taxon Phoxinellus spp. is classified under the names Phoxinellus pleurobipunctatus which are valid Greek taxa (Economidis, 1991). Some other taxa are evaluated as Other Important Species (sections 3.3). The fish Leuciscus cephalus peloponnensis, the water shrew Neomys anomalus, the bat Pipistrellus pipistrellus and the jackal Canis aureus are mentioned in the Greek Red Data Book under the categories of "Locally Vulnerable", "Insufficiently Known", "Endangered" and "Vulnerable", respectively. Moreover the Red Fox Vulpes v. hellenica is a Greek endemic taxon. The following taxa are eligible for motivation D since they are mentioned in the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981: the frog Hyla arborea, the lacertid lizard Lacerta trilineata, the colubrid snakes N. natrix and Coluber najadum, the shrew Crocidura suaveolens, the water shrew Neomys anomalus, the bat Pipistrellus pipistrellus and the weasel Mustela nivalis. In additon to that, the frog Hyla arborea justifies motivation D as it has been evaluated by the CORINE-Biotopes Project along with lizard Ablepharus kitaibelii. The frog Rana epeirotica deserve motivation D for being Balkan endemics. Finally, the following taxa receive motivation D for the following reasons: C. k. bibroni for having a broken distribution area therefore forming isolated populations, the hare Lepus europaeus since intensive hunting has limited its populations very much, and the fish L. c. peloponnensis because of its distribution (confined to only three areas of Peloponnisos) and its habitat destruction.

Σχόλιο για τις απειλές-διαταραχές
Τρωτότητα The ecosystem is detrimentally influenced mainly by: a) The disposal of household and industrial waste (due to the processing of natural products) into the river, b) The misuse of fertilisers due to the intense cultivation of the area, c) The illegal construction of tourist cottages, d) The construction of a dam which affects the dynamic evolution of the Pineios delta area and causes very important changes caused to the quality and quantity of materials carried by the river water. More specifically, the main threats to all the animal taxa appear mostly during the summer months in the form of water pollution by ample pesticides and fertilizers used in the intensively cultivated lands and by effluents from the tomato canning industries which exist in the area. Moreover large quantities of tomatoes, as well as dead livestock is disposed in the river. Sand removal and the overdrawing of water deteriorate the water conditions and riverside habitats, whereas the land habitats are destructed in order to build farming or human settlements. Hunting activities around and the concentration of different kinds of refuse on the banks and in the delta is another serious problem. These harmful activities have strongly influenced many animal populations and constitute reasons for the decline of the Pineios delta ecosystem.
