Γεωλογία
Περιγραφή Τόπου The area of this site consists of the central and mountainous part of the island of Lefkada (600-1140 m). It is located south-south-east of the villages of Exanthia and Chortata and includes the three main summits and the slopes of the mount Elati. Geologically the area is more or less uniform and is characterized by a dominant limestone substrate which also contributes to the development of an interesting geomorphology (valleys, rocky slopes, cliffs, dolines, etc.) Table-lands of different sizes are also very common in that area and until a few years ago, vineyards, producing the famous traditional red wine, were the predominant agricultural activity in that area. In spite of the fact that the highest mountain of Lefkada island is called Elati (i.e. fir tree in Greek) neither Abies forest nor single Abies trees have been observed there. The dominant vegetation type in this area is phrygana which however could be characterized as a degraded maquis. This situation seem to be the result of both human activities (agriculture, grazing, fires, etc.) and ecological factors (karstic limestones).

Σχόλιο για τις αξίες The significance of this site is based on the presence of some floristically and biogeographically important elements. Among them are several Ionian or Greek endemic taxa already listed but also two species of the attractive and biogeographically important genus Paeonia, which is rare in Greece namely: P. mascula subsp. russi and P. peregrina. The area of our site is the northwestern end of the distribution range of P. mascula subsp. russi and the southern corresponding one for P. peregrina. It is worthnoting that Lefkada is the only site in Greece where the distribution ranges of two Paeonia species overlap. Consequently this site should be considered as "living" and remarkable evidence, possibly suggesting that Central Greece was an area where different phytogeographical elements met each other. Distribution patterns like these are very important as they help us to understand the richness and diversity of the Greek flora. The limited number of taxa known to occur in this site does not necessarily represent the diversity of its fauna. Additional research will provide a more complete picture of the site’s fauna. For the time being, only some non-bird vertebrate taxa evaluated as Other Important Species are given (see section 3.3). All these species are protected by the Bern Convention and are therefore marked with motivation C. The lizard Ablepharus kitaibelii, being evaluated by the CORINE-Biotopes Project, receives the motivation D. The same motivation has been given to the lacertid lizard Algyroides nigropunctatus and the colubrid snake Coluber gemonensis since they are both Balkan endemics and mentioned in the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981. The invertebrate species Zerynthia polyxena (section 3.3, motivation C) is protected by the Bern Convention.

Σχόλιο για τις απειλές-διαταραχές
Τρωτότητα Today vineyards and other related agricultural activities have been restricted but the opposite seems to be the case with the raising of stock. As it is well known that stock raising affects flora and vegetation in different ways (overgrazing, firing the land to encourage the growth of pastures, construction of new roads to facilitate transportation etc.). The construction of new roads very often takes place without any environmental study which in this case could be catastrophic for the rare small, localized and reproducing paeony populations. In addition, the development of a mountain road network may promote the establishment of quarrying in the area which is another danger for specialized plant species and communities. Stock farming, hunting and shooting are also activities which threaten the fauna of this site and its broader mountain area. For the time being, the recorded snakes are probably safe, but the rare vultures and other avifauna are exposed to illegal hunting.
