Γεωλογία
Περιγραφή Τόπου From a geological point of view, limestones and dolomites constitute the bedrock of Mt. Kalon Oros. The slopes of south and southwest exposure have steep gradients whilst all other slopes are characterized by gentle gradients. The vegetation cover presents a low diversity since it is mainly composed of macchia with the dominant species of Quercus coccifera, Pistacia lentiscus and Arbutus unedo. Macchia vegetation is very dense on eastern and northern exposed slopes, while on the south and southwestern slopes it is very sparse. In higher altitudes up to the peak, rocky grasslands with sparse individuals of Quercus coccifera occur on the west exposed slopes. These areas were cultivated in the past (olive trees, vineyards) but are now abandoned.

Σχόλιο για τις αξίες This site is considered as an EC Important Bird Area mainly because of the occurrence of a Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) colony. The other vertebrate fauna is also remarkable. Actually, some non-bird vertebrate taxa recorded in this site have been evaluated according to criteria used in the Natura 2000 Project. Some of them are included in Annex II of the Directive 92/43/EEC (section 3.2). The remaining taxa are classified under the categories of Other and Greek Important Species (section 3.3). Among them, the Algyroides lizard taxa are endemic to Greece showing a limited area of distribution (especially A. nigropunctatus kephallithacius). All are protected by the Bern Convention (motivation C); also apart from the viperid snake Vipera ammodytes and the marten Martes foina, all are protected by Greek legislation (Presidential Decree 67/1981) and for this reason are marked with motivation D. Additionally, the snake Coluber gemonensis has been allocated the same motivation since it is a western Balkan endemic. The invertebrate species listed in section 3.3 with motivation C are protected by the Bern Convention. Saturnia pyri is protected by the IUCN Red List and the European Red List of Globally Threatened Animals and Plants and it is included in the "Listing of biotopes in Europe according to their significance for invertebrates".

Τρωτότητα The main human activities, with negative impacts, which take place in the whole area to a great extent, are considered to be fires and overgrazing. Stock farming, hunting and shooting are also activities which threaten this site and its broader mountainous area. For the time being the recorded reptiles and mammals are probably safe but the rare vultures and other avifauna are exposed to illegal hunting.
