The most important ecological value of the site is the undisturbed ecosystem. This ecosystem is natural with a great ecological and silvicultural importance and it can be used as a model (pattern) for studying the dynamic evolution of other natural forest ecosystems. The site has a number of rare plant species (of the herbaceous vegetation) for Greece and Europe and is also characterized by a rich fauna in number and species. The total site is today 1072 ha of which 589 ha are under protection as SPA, 269 ha are protected after the decision of the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food and, finally, 214 ha are protected by the Forest District Office of Drama. The reference on Leuciscus cephalus is about the subspecies macedonicus. Concerning the fauna the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of the invertebrates Neptis rivularis, Limenitis populi, Limenitis camilla which are the southern edge of extension, the invertebrate Carcharodus flocciferus which is referred to Heath J. 1981. Threatened Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Europe. Council of Europe and the invertebrate Apatura iris which is contained to the Presidential Decree 67/1981.Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, one taxon is greek endemic, 2 taxa (Lathraea rhodopea, Lilium rhodopaeum) are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list, 4 taxa (Dianthus petraeus ssp. orbelicus, Gentiana asclepiadea, Gentiana symphyandra, Viola tricolor L. ssp. macedonica) are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981), 4 taxa (Aconitum lamarkii, Centaurea nervosa ssp. nervosa, Crepis conyzifolia, Valeriana officinalis ssp. collina) are rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece and 4 taxa (Abies borisii-regis, Lactuca visianii, Silene waldsteinii, Veronica barrelieri) are Balkan endemics. |
