| Σχόλιο για τις αξίες | Area of high interest on account of the endemic plant species and other plants with restricted distribution. There are also rare species of birds and insects. The central part of the site is a bear-habitat (Bears use this place in winter for nesting and reproduction). Forest Service has never use this site as a "forest management area", because of its beauty and virginity. They suggest to "manage" this area as a Natural Monument (an expansion of the already Natural Monument of 1.8 ha). The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food proclaimed in 1979. 1,8 ha of the site as "Natural Monument" (No. of Proclamation 200995/7950/79). The Forest Service of Xanthi proposed in 1994 to the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food the expansion of the "Natural Monument" to 3.209,3 ha. (No. of Proposition D 2859/28-1-1994). Concerning the fauna the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of the invertebrates Neptis rivularis, Limenitis populi and Erebia aethiops which are the southern edge of extension.Concerning the wild growing plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of 6 important taxa. Among them, 2 taxa (Sempervivum marmoreum, Viola stojanowii) are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list, 2 taxa (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Jovibarba heuffelii) are protected by the Greek Presidential Decree (67/1981), one taxon (Stachys officinalis) is rare in Greece and one taxon (Silene waldsteinii) is Balkan endemic. |
